Tool Introduction

This reference follows the classic /etc/services layout. The Well-Known group covers ports 1-1023; UNIX-specific ports cover classic BSD services such as rlogin and syslog; Registered ports are vendor-assigned by IANA; DDP lists Datagram Delivery Protocol ports on AppleTalk; Kerberos covers the Project Athena/MIT authentication suite; Unregistered lists ports used by common Red Hat Enterprise Linux services without an IANA registration. Bracketed names in square brackets are aliases or daemon names (e.g. biff[comsat]).

Port numbers are drawn from the source table; registered names are primary, unregistered names are aliases. Ranges: 0-1023 well-known, 1024-49151 registered, 49152-65535 dynamic. To see what a port is used for on your own machine, pick an entry and run the Check what is listening command.
